The Russian President has lauded the success of tax incentives in Northern Territories, a region claimed by both Russia and Japan. These measures aimed to stimulate economic growth and strengthen sovereignty over the disputed territory. Critics, however, argue this could ignite tensions between the two countries as the tax benefits have led to increased Russian presence in the area. As yet, there have been no official responses from the Japanese Government.

In Japan, the Northern Territories issue is a major point of political and patriotic concern. Japan has repeatedly stated its claim over the islands and views any attempts to alter the status quo via economic methods as an infringement on its sovereignty. The tax incentives put forth by Russia, thus, might be received negatively by the Japanese public, and puts increased diplomatic pressure on the Japanese government.

In the US or EU, similar territorial disputes, like the US-China over South China Sea or EU's Gibraltar dispute, also see a mix of diplomatic and economic tools being utilized to assert sovereignty. Yet, these issues are typically accompanied by extensive international dialogue and often involve third-party mediation, a step that is yet to be seen in the Russia-Japan dispute over the Northern Territories.
