In a bid to revamp the travel experience onboard Japanese Shinkansen "Bullet Trains", operators are introducing private seating sections christened as "Nozomi". The new seating arrangements, dubbed as personal cabins, offer added privacy claiming an upgraded travel experience. Unveiled recently, these seating options are expected to roll out in the coming weeks, marking a significant shift in the passenger comfort strategy of Japan railway corporations.
In Japan, punctuality, comfort and seamless travel experience are deeply ingrained in the society's perception of transportation. This introduction of private cabins therefore is seen as a progressive move towards meeting luxury expectations of an increasing number of customers who frequent long distance train travel. It also aligns with Japanese societal values of privacy, innovation and customer centered service.
In comparison to the US or EU, where luxury is usually associated with air travel, Japan's focus on enhancing ground travel comfort further highlights the cultural significance of trains in their daily life. While luxury train travels exist in the EU and US, they are generally special, less frequent services rather than the norm.
