Japan has unveiled preliminary plans for ensuring the sustainability of its imperial lineage, commonly known as "皇族数確保" in Japanese. To prevent depletion of the lineage, several measures are being actively considered. These initiatives, yet to be fully finalized, have emerged amidst concerns about the declining means of natural succession within the imperial bloodline. It is viewed as a significant step towards preserving Japan's ceremonial monarchy and its rich heritage.

In Japan, the imperial family holds a central position in both historical and present-day society. It embodies cultural and symbolic values, rather than political governance, making its preservation a heartfelt concern for many Japanese citizens. However, the imperial succession law, which requires only male descendants from the male line of the imperial family to ascend the throne, has propagated fears of an imminent succession crisis.

While the US does not have an equivalent issue due to its presidential system, monarchies in the EU, like the UK, have modernized their succession laws to prevent a similar crisis. Notably, the UK changed its royal succession laws in 2013, allowing succession regardless of gender or marital status which may provide a possible comparison for Japan.
