A man in Japan, who went foraging for wild vegetables in the mountains, was found dead with signs of animal bites. The unknown male, who appeared to go mountain foraging often, was unfortunately discovered after not returning from an outing. The authorities are currently identifying the type of animal that could have caused the injuries.
In rural parts of Japan, particularly during spring, it's not uncommon for people to go to the mountains to pick wild vegetables, known as a mountain foraging or sansai tori culture. In most cases, these trips are safe, but occasionally encounters with wildlife, such as bears and wild boar, can become dangerous. This incident is particularly unfortunate and tragic and raises concerns over safety measures during such trips.
In the US or EU, similar caution would be urged for outdoor activities involving potential wildlife encounters. Education for proper outdoor safety is constantly stressed, such as carrying bear spray or making noise to alert wildlife of human presence, with many resources made available to the public.
