Police in Kyoto are investing an alleged case of a son leaving his elderly father in a vehicle, upon suspicion of abandonment. Following an anonymous tip, investigators are now corroborating the suspect's confession. The incident has sparked discussions about family responsibility and elderly care in a rapidly ageing Japanese society.
In Japan, there's a strong value placed on familial piety and care of the elderly, with most of the society expecting that children take care of their aging parents. Evident by this case, abandonment of family, particularly the elderly, can cause significant public concern.
Like Japan, there are laws against elder abandonment in the US and the EU as well. But unlike in Japan, the US and EU have more structured and diverse resources for elder care. They include a mixture of government-funded programs, nursing homes, and in-home care services.
