Next Stop, Regular Homes: Osaka's Mini-Accommodations Revamp

Osaka Prefecture is planning to cease the special-zone private lodging system in all its 32 municipalities. This move is deemed as a step towards efficiently managing the influx of tourists, while preserving the traditional residential ambiance of the area. The decision, as it stands, is anticipated to take effect shortly but official dates have yet to be confirmed.

Short-term rentals, known as "minpaku" in Japan, have become a controversial topic due to contrasting interests between locals and tourists. In an effort to manage tourism and maintain the peace within residential districts, Japan has implemented stringent guidelines on such accommodations, especially in notable cities like Osaka.

In contrast, the US or EU have a less rigid approach towards short-term rentals with cities individually setting their own regulations. While some cities enforce strict rental laws, others have a laissez-faire approach, leading to a diverse landscape of rental accommodation regulations.
