Residents of homes listed on vacation rental platforms in Japan are finding it a struggle to voice concerns over guests leaving waste behind due to fear of negative online reviews. This issue has been escalating over some time, raising hygiene and environmental concerns. Although some platforms have regulations to address this issue, implementation remains a challenge, especially given the indirect communication style prevalent in Japanese culture.
Given the importance of cleanliness and social harmony in Japan, this issue is seen as a significant concern within communities with vacation rentals. The fear of confrontation and a general tendency to avoid causing inconvenience to others, particularly visitors, accentuates this problem.
In contrast, the U.S or EU may handle this issue more directly. Vacation rental platforms and local governments typically have more clearly defined guidelines for waste management. The more direct communication style in these regions means issues are typically addressed head-on.
