Torrential rain is striking the region of Kyushu, causing severe flooding. Numerous people have been caught in the deluge, with reports of individuals being swept away by swollen rivers. The timing and full extent of these extreme weather conditions are still being assessed, but the immediate concern is for those at risk and the ongoing rescue operations.
Japan, with its severe weather occurrences, such as typhoons and heavy rain, has strategic disaster response measures set up. People usually heed warnings, evacuate promptly, and demonstrate high resilience. Yet, there are always concerns about the elderly or those unable to evacuate themselves, and structural vulnerabilities leading to landslides.
In contrast, both US and EU also face extreme weather patterns and have their disaster response strategies. However, Japan's high frequency of such disasters has led to the development of world-class early warning and evacuation systems, which are not as rigid or widespread in the US or EU.
